The Masterpiece

Hello, dear friends!

It is Mardi Gras Day 2012 and I'm sitting here taking a break from moving into my new little cottage here in the amazing city of Lafayette, Louisiana.  I have so much on my heart to share.  I think we probably all have so much on hearts to share.  Please let this be a place where that can happen for you.

As I write, I am very aware that God is closer than my next breath.  What a gift...I am so grateful.

About this blog...it will be a place with the sole intention to glorify God.  You will come to discover all sorts of things that are mostly rooted in Catholic ministry and art.

Years ago, I was blessed to travel to Europe on a Mediterranean cruise. (A gift of my sweet sister, Cindy.)  On one of the many excursions, we visited the historical city of Florence.  I saw statues and statues and art and mosaics and cathedrals and statues and more statues, including DAVID.  It was mind-boggling.  But on this particular day, I found myself sitting back and resting on one of the massive columns that surround St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.  I had just toured Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica.  As I walked into each historical site, I remember thinking that I might lose my breath from the excitement of finally being able to see the art that I read about.  Finally, I was walking through the massive basilica and seeing The Pieta, the great altars, the gorgeous domes...so much...so much.  In the Sistine Chapel, like everyone else there, my neck began to hurt from gazing up at Michelangelo's gift to God's people.  I had FINALLY seen all of this.

I thought that I was going to be amazed by all of this "bigger than life" art and I suppose, in some way, I was.  But that was not "the art" that took my breath away.

No, it was another work of art that left me in an undeniable state of awe.

It was the human beings.  God showed me that these creatures were the most treasured and valuable art in the world.

I found myself looking at their faces, listening to their voices, watching the movement of their arms, hands and fingers.  It was as if I had never seen any of this before and it was a wonder to me.

That was the art that took my breath away. He showed me His masterpiece and I am forever grateful.
